Starting Over

I would love to start running again after taking 10 years off. I am a 33-year-old female and still stay in shape, but I feel that I do not get the results that I did from running. What do you suggest? (name withheld)

REPLY: Oh, to be 33 again! I'm more than 20 years ahead of you and sometimes feel it... but also feel that running is as good as it ever was, if not better. Only the stopwatch tells a different story.

My suggestions:

1. Get a good book for instruction and inspiration. I can recommend several if you'd like.

2. Find a partner or a running group. Some runners who have trouble getting going find the company is their answer.

3. Set a goal... whether it's to a Race for the Cure 5-K or a Team in Training marathon. Having a target keeps you getting up and out, especially on these almost-winter mornings.
